Open Crime Data in Fort Worth, TX

Image
We often complain about cities who don't share crime data openly (San Jose) or move away from transparency ( Indianapolis ) and don't give enough kudos to cities who move in the right direction. Well, we'd like to say: Way To Go Fort Worth, TX ! Fort Worth recently announced the launch of their open data portal and we've learned that they will be posting a crime data set on the portal by October. Currently, we are manually requesting data from the Fort Worth PD. We've been required to FOIA request crime data from the department  for the past five years . There are two proprietary vendor crime mapping companies who are already mapping crime in Fort Worth, but due to restrictions on the vendor websites, the data is not open (meaning it can't be used and shared by anyone). When we see the dataset available on the open data portal in October, we'll be happily mapping it, ceasing our manual requests, and we'll move Fort Worth's SpotCrime Crim
