Check Out SpotCrime's New Front Page

Image
We updated our front page today! Check it out at http://spotcrime.com The major difference is we made the top bar smaller and changed the color from red to white. We wanted to move everything up the page a bit more for viewers. And we felt the color change from red to white helps lead your eyes to the important stuff - the icons on the map! We also updated our email alerts the other. We created more white space, made font larger, and made it easier to view the email as a web page if needed. What are your thoughts? Do you like the changes? Have ideas of your own? Let us know feedback@spotcrime.com!

Miami-Dade, FL now updated DAILY!

The county is commonly called Miami, Miami-Dade, Dade County, Dade, Metro-Dade, or greater Miami. We like to call the area Miami-Dade because the police department is goes by the Miami-Dade Police Department. The department is a full service metropolitan police department serving unincorporated areas of the County. And make sure not to confuse Miami-Dade PD with the Miami PD because they are two separate departments. But don't worry - we are mapping Miami , the largest city in the county, too! Broward County, Collier County, and Monroe County border Miami-Dade. Companies like Brightstar Corp, Burger King, and Norwegian Cruise Lines are headquartered in the county. The county also holds the majority of sports venues including arenas and s...

Crime data - when digital - is an unlimited public resource

Image
Crime data is an unlimited public resource when digitized.   SpotCrime.com Through the power of the Internet we all can look at digital data, and share it with one another at no cost.  For example, social media.  We can share whatever we want whenever we want through digital channels like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn for free 'Like' SpotCrime on Facebook here If a police department chooses to turn the unlimited resource of digital public crime data into a finite resource by giving a single entity the right to control and regulate the data, then the public should share in the value created by turning that unlimited resource into a monopolized resource. Just like a utility company is regulated, a company with sole control over public data should also be regulated. A more optimal solution for the public, and arguably greater value to the whole of society, would be to release the data unrestricted to everyone - providing equal and fair acces...

SpotCrime Offers Its Crime Mapping Service to Police Departments Nationwide

SpotCrime, the most comprehensive online source for crime data, announced today that it will make its crime mapping service available to every police department in the U.S. free of charge. The decision by SpotCrime to map crime data for any police department that requests it “will help to meet the public’s increasing demand for accurate, up-to-date crime data, allowing departments to devote more of their budgets to putting police on the street,” according to SpotCrime Founder and President Colin Drane. Drane decided to offer crime mapping services to police departments nationwide after learning that some of his competitors were charging police agencies for exclusive mapping services, then reselling that crime data for commercial purposes. “Knowing how much people need that crime data, we wanted to make our crime mapping services available without locking police departments into restrictive contracts with a single vendor,” explains Drane, whose company has become the nation’s mo...
