SpotCrime is now mapping crime in San Marcos, TX ! San Marcos is located in between Austin and San Antonio and has a population of over 44k. We reached out to the police department by request of a San Marcos resident who happened to be one of our users. Within a week, we started receiving data from the department and had it mapped on SpotCrime! We'll be updating the map daily now. FBI 2011 UCR Statistics - Violent and Property Crimes

The FBI recently published their annual 2011 UCR statistics for cities across the US.  These statistics are compiled by the FBI with data that is submitted by police departments.  Most departments across the US voluntarily submit their crime data to the FBI on a monthly basis.  If you're interested in UCR statistics for your city, give your local PD a ring - UCR stats are public information. You can check out and download the FBI 2011 UCR data here Out of curiosity, I created a few charts to visualize what my chances were of being a victim of crimes in cities with a population greater than 1 million.  These cities included Chicago , Dallas , Houston , Las Vegas , Los Angeles , New York , Philadelphia , Phoenix , San Antonio , and San Diego . San Antonio Crime Heat Map Shootings

The crime maps above depict areas of intensity commonly known as heat maps. The data used to create these maps is the last one hundred reported shootings in San Antonio. Based on other crime maps done by SpotCrime , these maps seem to have more areas of intensity than others. Bright yellow areas are the hottest areas for shootings or the highest areas of concentration of shootings in San Antonio. Both maps are using the same data. The map with the push pins is showing the specific shootings mapped by SpotCrime to generate the heat map.

The above map was pulled from SpotCrime's San Antonio crime map mashup. For 2008, we have mapped 28 shootings in and around San Antonio from January to October.
