SpotCrime - The Public's Crime Map

The  murder rate is on the rise , gun deaths in America are at an all time high , and cities like Chicago and Baltimore  are facing huge criticisms on policing tactics. Is the shooting epidemic across America's cities a  policing issue , policy issue, or cultural issue? This question is up for debate. What we do know is that it is imperative that the public know about and have access to this kind of crime data and information.  There is no federal repository for nationwide shooting data , so what does shooting data look like on a map? Shootings in Baltimore, MD in less than a month period There are many different datasets currently being curated involving shootings - homicides involving firearms, suicides involving firearms, accidental shootings, police involved shootings, mass shootings - but nothing specifically to track all shootings, no matter the circumstance. SpotCrime is the only crime mapping company that intentionally breaks out shootings from assaults and makes a shooting it’s own stand alone icon. In many cases, this is not an easy task. Police agencies identify shootings a couple of ways so the ability for residents to identify when a shooting occurs becomes difficult. Occasionally shooting data is easy to find, and other times it is buried under complex systems of crime classifications. Two agencies, The Vera Institute of Justice in accordance with The Police Foundation and the NYPD in accordance with Microsoft, have recently announced their own separate development, test, and implementation of a model for law enforcement agencies aiming to upgrade current CompStat processes. Both The Vera Institute and NYPD are calling their new versions of CompStat ‘CompStat 2.0’. The Vera Institute has a history of work on public safety related issues like police management practices, police-community relations, misconduct, and policing in democratic societies worldwide. And, the Vera Institute worked with the NYPD in the past on development of projects including The Manhattan Summons project as well as the development and implementation of the original CompStat launched by NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton in the early 90’s. SpotCrime Crime Listing of Baltimore May homicides. To create your own SpotCrime Crime List click here . Our hometown of Baltimore saw absolute madness in May. We've put together a SpotCrime Crime Listing map of the homicides and shootings that we've been able to find, address, and map which occurred in May in Baltimore city. To view the entire list, click here . There are 39 incidents on this crime list. One incident is a quintuple shooting , multiple incidents list victims being shot multiple times. Most of the victims appear to be men, but there are a few women involved. The main weapon used is a gun, however there are a few stabbings listed. The Baltimore Sun reports 43 homicides, one of the deadliest months the city has seen since the 42 homicides that occurred in August of 1990, with 115 homicides to date in 2015. While uploading data this weekend the SpotCrime team noticed an interesting trend in Baltimore crime patterns. It is a known fact that the City of Baltimore is no stranger to gun violence. Below is a map containing all incidents of shootings from September 2009 up to yesterday Sunday, November the 15th. In total 273 have occurred since September 1st. This is a map containing shootings from Monday November 9th to Friday November 13th: There is a total of 6 shootings. 1 on Monday. 1 on Wednesday. 2 on Thursday. 2 on Friday. Below is a map containing the shootings for Saturday and Sunday: There are a total of 7 shootings for a 2 day period. Through this comparison we are able to deduct that gun violence is more prevalent in the Baltimore area during weekends; although any reasons we can give are merely speculative.
