With the recent shooting in Charlottesville, reported by our partner NBC 29 , we thought it helpful to show where the shootings have occurred this year in the city. The two crime maps above provide different representations of the recent shootings in Charlottesville. The first map is a typical SpotCrime shooting icon map with other crimes filtered out and a date range of January to March 31st. Anyone can create a similar map by going to our crime map on NBC 29. Link here. The second crime map is a heat map of the shootings where color represents intensity or concentration of shooting activity. Bright yellow indicates the highest concentration.

The map above is a result of a key word search "pizza" within the SpotCrime database. The time period for this search is January 1 to March 30th. This search was a result of a disturbing number of thefts and robberies involving Pizza delivery persons. Over 100 crimes are listed here.

The map above is a graphical interpretation of the shooting hot spots in Annapolis. Using the most recent reported shootings and the HeatMapAPI, SpotCrime is able to identify the highest areas of concentration of shootings in Annapolis. Bright yellow indicates the highest concentration of shootings.

The two heat maps above show areas of concentration of the last 100 reported shootings in Baltimore. The second map, we've included the data points to show how the heat graphic displays concentration. While no map perfectly depicts information, this is an interesting tool to show areas of crime concentration- particularly shootings. In the case of these heat maps, "hotter areas" or bright yellow areas are locations with higher concentration of shootings based on proximity to each other.
