Birmingham, Alabama Crime Map

For the first half of the twentieth century, Birmingham's economy was based of heavy industry and manufacturing. In fact, it was the main hub for this industry in the South. However with the flight of manufacturing throughout the mid to late 20th century, Birmingham's economy eroded and crime began to proliferate. To combat this decay, the city initiated an urban renewal and economic development strategy that focused around the medical industry. Today, it is an example that it is possible to transform manufacturing cities into a post industrial economy. While our database cannot determine crime rate from the past, it is possible to take a look at its crime statistics from March 2009 to May 2009 and see hotspots.
