Deal Will Bring Crime Reporting Service to North Carolina, Pacific Northwest

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SpotCrime, the largest independent data and news company mapping crime worldwide, has signed deals with Fisher Communications (NASDAQ: FSCI) and Capitol Broadcasting Company to provide local crime data to the public via broadcast stations owned by each company.

Fisher Communications (www.fsci.com), based in Seattle, owns or manages 13 full-power television stations (including KOMO-TV, www.komonews.com, and KATU-TV, www.katu.com), 7 low-power television stations, and 8 radio stations. Fisher also owns and operates Fisher Pathways, a satellite and fiber transmission provider, and Fisher Plaza, a media, telecommunications, and data center located near downtown Seattle.

Capitol Broadcasting Company (www.cbc-raleigh.com) owns and/or operates WRAL-TV (www.wraltv.com), WRAL Digital, WRAL-FM, WRAL-HD2, WCMC-FM, Microspace, CBC New Media Group, and Wolfpack Sports Marketing, all based in Raleigh, NC; WJZY-TV and WMYT-TV in Charlotte, NC; WILM-TV in Wilmington, NC; and WRAL-TV in Durham, NC.

“We are very excited to be making SpotCrime available to citizens in the Pacific Northwest and North Carolina’s Research Triangle, and to be working with such great media partners as Fisher and Capitol,” says SpotCrime Founder and President Colin Drane.

According to Drane, SpotCrime was founded on the principle that information is power, and it is the right of every citizen to have easy access to crime information in their neighborhood.

“We strongly believe that intended and unintended positive social consequences will evolve from SpotCrime,” Drane explains. “With our information, citizens’ awareness of their surroundings will increase and subsequently they will be able to make safer decisions. There is wisdom in the noise, and we hope to draw attention to crime hot spots to help direct policy and resources in the prevention of crime.”

As an unbiased crime source, SpotCrime does not selectively report or judge crimes and is the only company mapping crime that does not partner with local police departments. “Though we have great relationships with the police, we believe in complete transparency and independence, which ensures that we remain unbiased in our reporting,” notes Drane.

In addition to the deals with Fisher and Capitol Broadcasting, SpotCrime partners with more than 50 other media companies to make crime data available. The company recently signed major deals with Belo (NYSE:BLC, www.belo.com), one of the country’s largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, and Newport Television (www.newporttv.com), which owns stations in 22 markets nationwide.

Other partners include WBAL-AM (www.wbal.com) in Baltimore, NBC-29 (www.nbc29.com) in Charlottesville, The Austin Statesman (www.statesman.com), The Lakeland Ledger (www.theledger.com), and KLAS-8 Las Vegas (www.LasVegasNow.com).
