Why SpotCrime Works

If your city isn't on the map yet, here are some reasons why you should hurry up and send your public crime data over to SpotCrime and why our maps just work:

1. It's free - free to send us data, free to map data, free to send alerts, free to sign up for alerts, free to perform detailed crime searches, free to create a crime listing...we don't collect a dime from police departments or residents (or any tax dollars).

2. It's an easy to use map with easily identifiable crime icons.  Our crime maps are made for the people, of the people, by the people - they are not Rube Goldberg machines and we only collect and display public information. And since each crime email alert has a personalized map included, it's super easy to forward your crime alert on to friends and family.  We sent out over 1 million SpotCrime email alerts - just last week!  Even Grandma knows how to work SpotCrime!

3.  We are pretty good at getting information out to the public.  SpotCrime is currently the most viewed crime mapping website by a factor of 2 meaning that every time someone views a crime map, about 52% of the time it's a SpotCrime map.  Check out the graph -

We let residents choose the way they want to view data - either on SpotCrime.com, SpotCrime.info, MyLocalCrime.com or their email alerts, take your pick!

We've partnered with local media outlets who display SpotCrime maps on their site for residents to view - including Gannett, Sinclair, Media General, Belo, Clarity Media, Fox and NYTimes properties

Social Media -we've got that covered as well.  With social media becoming the newest and fastest way to communicate, we take pride that we have most 'liked' crime map pages on Facebook !  You can also find us on Twitter, Pinterest, Posterous, Tumblr...the list goes on.

Finally, we don't restrict access to public crime data.  No lengthy terms of use telling you what you can and can not do with the public crime information we display.  By not locking up the data on our site, we allow innovation, hoping someone will do something cool with the data.  Just be nice with our data and our website.  What if someone comes up with something cooler and better?  Then great! It means we are achieving our goal of making crime data open, equal, and giving fair access to the public!
