Live (or dead) from the 504

New Orleans is the location of numerous Mardi Gras celebrations, the French Quarter and Bourbon Street; ground zero to the hurricane Katrina destruction, the Ninth Ward, and the recent BP oil spill; home to beignets, numerous spicy and delicious creole recipes, spontaneous street bands, rap superstar Lil Wayne and 2009 Super Bowl Champs New Orleans Saints (WHO DAT!?)--the list could go on--and the city is now the newest updated map on SpotCrime!

Checking out the SpotCrime NOLA map and local WWL-TV, you'll find that this city is home to their fair share of violence as well. On the main crime page of WWL-TV , deaths by shootings are included in numerous headlines.

It may be settling to read that New Orleans crimes reported to the police department since 2009 have fallen 9% however, it's even more unsettling to learn that the murder rate is at a standstill. At least its not on the rise, but when compared to other US cities across the FBI UCR, New Orleans ranks #1 in murder rates for 2009.

The police department and US Justice Department have been trying to take measures to help protect the citizens and tourists of this unique city. They have beefed up their homicide unit and re-organized their leadership. They have also tried different ways to reach out to the community.

The community and police need to work together to grab a hold of crime in this brilliant, historic, charming city. Start your own community watch by signing up for SpotCrime alerts in your area.
