Spooky Crimes Mapped on SpotCrime
The world of crime is definitely a strange one.
SpotCrime has a couple of search capabilities. One of which is a keyword search through the entire SpotCrime database.
We strongly encourage police agencies to include as many details as possible in the description with each crime incident provided to the public.
A good description provides specific information behind a crime that is helpful to residents. For example, the description of a suspect, how a burglar gained entry, or what kind of weapon was used in an armed robbery.
This kind of information makes it easier to prevent something similar from happening in the future.
We used creepy Halloween words to search through our database and found some pretty offbeat and strange crimes. If you’re wondering if we have the classic Jason or Michael Myers crimes mapped, we made sure we had the real life horror flick crimes mapped on SpotCrime in this blog post.
You’ll notice that some of the linked crimes below don’t show much of a description or only have a code or code word. Do you find this helpful? We don’t. So make sure your police agency knows you’d like as much of a description as possible when they release crime data to the public.
Ghost - Thankfully the only crimes we found with the word ‘ghost’ in them were crimes with ‘ghost’ in the street name like this Burglary on Ghost Town Road in San Bernardino, CA.
Serial Killer - Here is a shooting that may be linked to a serial killer in Fort Myers, FL.
Corpse - This one pulled up a few different crimes including an arrest for intent to impair a human corpse in Galveston, TX, a theft from a human corpse/grave in Corpus Christi, TX, and an arrest in Fernandina Beach, FL when a man did not report his girlfriend’s death. He lived at home with the corpse for over a week. CREEPY.
Zombie - There was a shooting at a ZombiCon in Fort Myers, FL earlier this month.
Witch - A business called the Witch and the Skeptic was burglarized in Lewiston, ME. And in Florida, a man was shot after throwing a dagger at a man claiming ‘that his sister was a witch and so was burned at the stake on that property, and so the property then belonged to him’ according to the police report. This incident was mapped from a media outlet because, unfortunately, Polk County doesn’t supply that kind of detail in the descriptions we get from them.
Haunted - Suspicious subjects running around with flashlights looking for a haunted house in Yakima, WA.
Goblin - Another one we are happy only shows up on SpotCrime because it’s a street name.
Skeleton - This word is a great example of when a description of what a suspect was wearing is including. For example, a skeleton hat, skeleton gloves, or an entire skeleton costume. what a suspect is wearing is definitely helpful information for the public to know.
How many creepy crimes can you find on SpotCrime? Does your police agency provide a good detailed description for each crime incident they release to the public? Stay aware, stay safe. And have a Happy Halloween!
