Why Public Crime Maps Stink

Image
In this post, I’d like to talk about the limitations of public crime maps and quasi-public-proprietary crime maps.   Don’t get me wrong, we at SpotCrime are fans of crime maps .  They are an effective tool to represent crime data and get information to the public.  But, crime maps are just one of many options of delivering useful crime data to the public. Maps in general will always have some type of dimensional limitations.  No matter how you adjust the parameters of time and distance with data on a map, it will still be just an incremental snapshot of the data set.   With crime data, if you take a too small snapshot and an area can appear to have no crime.  Take a too large of a snapshot and amount of crime data could crowd the map, show too much crime, and render the map unreadable.  Heat maps are sometimes employed to show density of data on a map, but these too have their own adjustable variances that can influence what is being projected.    Ultimately, the same limitations of a

The Windy City...take cover

Image
Violence seems to be the answer for residents in the Windy City of Chicago. If you check only the 'shootings' icon on the SpotCrime map for the past month, your results will prove to be very alarming. Brought to attention from Chicago affiliate WGN , the city experienced 42 shootings since 7 PM Friday this past weekend. This comes to an average of 11 shootings a day in the past month, including a 1 year old who was shot in the shoulder Sunday evening. Google search the words "Chicago Shooting" and you won't come up empty handed. You'll find another story, among dozens, that trumps this past weekend--50 shootings over Father's Day weekend of this year. The majority of those shootings occurred on the South and West sides and are reported to be gang related. Chicago has recently lifted their hand gun ban by a Supreme court ruling in the McDonald v. Chicago case. Stay alert, stay protected and stay informed. Steer clear of violent areas (keep your child

SpotCrime introduces a sister product--MyLocalCrime

The MyLocalCrime Crime Map is an alternative and faster way to view crime data and get information around a specific address. The map pinpoints a specific address and shows crime data around that address. This allows a viewer to see a more localized and recent information for the specified area. Google maps are still used, however, the icon structure is different. Simple symbols represent each crime instead of pictures. If you hover over a crime, you can view the details and information. You can also find information below the map. Compared to SpotCrime, MyLocalCrime uses a more simple approach to get crime information out to citizens. If you are trying to do a more complex crime search, SpotCrime may be a better option, but for a quick view, MyLocalCrime works best. MyLocalCrime works with most browsers to determine your location instantly so in most cases you aren't required to put in an address to view information! Of course, a different address can still be viewed by usi
