Image
Screenshot of Mansfield, OH  on SpotCrime SpotCrime is now mapping public data from hundreds of police agencies in Ohio. If you are an Ohio subscriber you may have noticed that some of your alerts included more data than normal. That’s because some of the data we uploaded was from 2014. Suggest they post it on their website in an open format - meaning it’s available for anyone to view, use, and share (not just SpotCrime!). Up-to-date data will allow us to send our daily and weekly alerts. And it will allow you to be a better informed citizen. Stay aware, stay safe!

Check Out SpotCrime's New Front Page

Image
We updated our front page today! Check it out at http://spotcrime.com The major difference is we made the top bar smaller and changed the color from red to white. We wanted to move everything up the page a bit more for viewers. And we felt the color change from red to white helps lead your eyes to the important stuff - the icons on the map! We also updated our email alerts the other. We created more white space, made font larger, and made it easier to view the email as a web page if needed. What are your thoughts? Do you like the changes? Have ideas of your own? Let us know feedback@spotcrime.com!

What's in Store for 2015?

Image
The crime mapping space in the business world is a small space. But for those who do seek out crime information, more people go to SpotCrime than anywhere else. Here is where we are by the numbers: Emails We are projected to send out over 125 million emails this year alone. That’s 125,000,000 alerts that are individually tailored to each user and delivered directly into their personal mailbox.  Apps We are the only company to have a crime map for the Kindle Fire in addition to Android and iPhone . SpotCrime.info is mobile friendly and works great on any browser. Web traffic (from Similarweb.com ) SpotCrime trumps in web traffic. We are almost twice the size of all other major crime mapping websites combined in December! Socially we’ve looked at the game a little differently than other crime mapping sites. Instead of posting about our own successes and daily happenings, we push out as much crime information to social platforms used by millions of people in

NEW! SpotCrime Android App Now Available

Image
Hello SpotCrime Friends! We just wanted to announce the release of our new SpotCrime Android App . ‘Finally!! SpotCrime for Android!’ is what you’re probably thinking. Yes, some of us Android users at SpotCrime are thinking the same thing too! Check out the official SpotCrime Android app at the Google Play store here . The app uses the GPS location on your phone to quickly show crime incidents that have occurred in the area you’re located. The app does cost $0.99, but, in our (completely unbiased) opinion, it’s totally worth it. If you don’t see crime data on the map , ask your local police department to be transparent with their crime data and SpotCrime will map it - for free. Remember, our websites and email alerts will always be free. And we don’t plan on ever charging police departments to deliver information to the public. Spot crime with SpotCrime, and get out of the crime spot. Don’t let anyone take your mojo! PS - Have an iPhone and now you’re jealous

Franklin County, Ohio is now on SpotCrime!

Image
After almost two years of work, SpotCrime is now mapping Franklin County ! Our quest to start mapping Franklin County started with our interest in mapping all crime in Columbus, OH . Franklin County itself is the second largest county in Ohio (followed by Cuyahoga County which holds Cleveland), Columbus is Franklin County's seat and the largest city in Ohio. Franklin County has a population of over 1 million, so naturally we'd be interested in mapping what happens in the city and county - crime knows on boundaries. You can also find the largest university in the US in Franklin County - The Ohio State University. We're mapping crime available from Ohio State on UCrime.com . Our media partners, ABC6  and FOX28 out of Columbus, host SpotCrime maps on their Fighting Back section of their site. Check out the Franklin County map and other Columbus areas we're mapping under the Fighting Back Area Crime Maps on ABC6 here . Make sure to check out ABC6 of FOX28 for yo

Small Police Departments Map Their Own Crime on SpotCrime

Image
Here at SpotCrime , we understand that with budget cuts to police departments across the county, most departments may be working on a budget and do not have resources for the latest and greatest technology, an IT Department, or a Crime Analysis unit. This is why SpotCrime offers the ability for smaller departments to map their own crime.  This option works best for departments who only respond to 5-10 incidents a day.  We see no need for small departments to pay money for big, complicated systems if the systems were made for larger departments anyway. Single entry is the best solution - and the least expensive option. Check out the Monroeville, PA SpotCrime map . Monroeville, PA crime map SpotCrime has given administrative access to an officer at the Monroeville Department who maps crimes by inputting each crime manually.  This is a free feature we offer along with the email alerts- we'll send out email alerts to residents in the area when crime is mapped.  A great way

Serial Sexual Assaults in Brooklyn, NY - Mapped on SpotCrime!

Image
Recently, there have been a string of sexual assaults against women in the Sunset Park/Windsor Terrace/Park Slope neighborhoods of Brooklyn, NY .  A total of 11 assaults since March.  The most recent occurred on Monday night when a man groped a woman after exiting the subway in Sunset Park.  Check out the crime listing we created to give a visual representation of where these assaults have occurred. To view the full interactive map on SpotCrime, head here  The NYPD does not believe the most recent crime is related to the 10 other sexual assaults.  But, since it occurred in the same area as the others, we decided to include it on our map. Picture from NBC New York coverage There have been 4 total sketches made from accounts from the victims.  Although all drawings are different, you can see some similarities in the race (possibly), hair color and nose of the suspect(s), which is why we think all of the incidents are related.  The man has been described as being 20 to 25 years

Crime Maps are Good but Open Distribution is Better

Here at SpotCrime, we've been mapping crime for over four years now and have learned a great deal about how crime data is reported from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.    Along the way, we've encountered some steep resistance to getting crime data open to the public.  Thankfully, many cities have been bitten by the ‘open data bug’ and have started delivering their public data openly without restrictions.  However, there are still some cities whose crime data is still immobilized by restrictions.  Those restrictions usually come in a form of Terms of Use limiting what you can and can not do with your public data.  Even after four years, it is still unclear to us why crime data intended for the public would come with restrictions. At SpotCrime, we've come to view crime mapping as a means to an end.  With the ultimate goal of getting relevant crime information to the public, increasing awareness, trust in law enforcement, and hopefully increasing the level of safety for each c
